le Surmelin

A destination in its own right

We welcome those who are looking to spend a few days in an authentic, simple and comfortable house on the bank of a river in a quiet rural village in the Champagne.

The property has been renovated with respect for the features of the 1900’s café and blacksmith. The materials are practical but not luxurious. The house is equipped with all the modern comforts in an authentic artistic and ‘bohemian’ look.

3 comfortable rooms

We deliberately choose, in order to keep our home a calm space to stay, to reduce our number of rooms to 3. Each of these rooms has its own private bathroom and toilet. Two have a double bed, one has two single beds. One room and its bathroom is wheelchair accessible, from street to terrace.

Terraces on the bank of the Surmelin

Our accessible terrace on the bank of the river Surmelin has a picturesque view on the medieval wash house and the footbridge to the village. In good weather you take your breakfast in the early morning sun.
On the lower terrace with 2 lounge chairs you relax to the sounds of nature and water. The ‘Surmelin’ room has its own terrace overlooking the river and our garden.

Diversity, durability and respect

Everyone is welcome … if you support the values of diversity and respectWe believe in “égalité, fraternité & liberté”, accept people as they are and expect you as well to be tolerant and open minded, non judging and letting ‘be’ everyone.
Although for us gender or colour is no issue, we experienced that we need to assure explicitly that whatever letter of “HLGBTQIA+” you might be or whatever colour you have, you are welcome and we care for you.

We speak English, French, Dutch and German to get in contact with as much people as possible because conversation is a main thing here.

Gentle dogs and dog-owners are welcome. Our Passerelle room is suitable for a stay with a dog in a basket. Our village and its vineyards are the prefect spot for a walk.

Here you eat well

Our breakfast is  complete and diverse. We serve ‘croissant and baguette’, coffee or tea, home-made marmelade, cheese and ham, freshly squeezed orange juice and, when available, boiled eggs and home-made yoghurt.
For your meals we like to suggest you a very fine local restaurant, which helps our community thrive.

Durability and rewilding

Just as we love our authentic old house with all its benefits, we want to return to an authentic and reasonably ecological environment. We choose our garden and surroundings to go wild, which seems like neglect but is caring for nature, birds, fish, rodents and insects, simply by not bothering them.

The sheets aren’t ironed. Extra towels are available on demand and individual packed soap or shampoo are not. Waste is selected in 3 separate bins in the kitchen, only the bag from your bathroom-bin is thrown away (privacy).

You drive the car you like, we like cars too, and for the electrical ones, we provide a 11kW WallBox charging point at cost price.

Discover the Champagne, region and wine

The landscapes and the vineyards, fields and forests, invite you to walk, cycle or ride a motorbike or car along the heritage of churches, castles, medieval buildings and the memory of the great wars. We have a “motoport” for 4 motorbikes only on reservation. Our house – on the route of the Champagne Tourist Route – lies in the southern Aisne, near Château-Thierry, 45″ from Reims, 30″ from Epernay, Soissons, Meaux or Chalons-en-Champagne.

We recommend a tasting with a small local independent winemaker and the purchase of some bottles.
